Indonesia Mining Association Requested The Export of Low Grade Nickel Laterite

(Jan 03, 2017)

The Indonesian Association of Mineral Entrepreneurs( Apemindo ) executive director Ladjiman Damanik, said that they asked the government to allow the export of low-grade laterite nickel ore on Dec. 28th, 2016.

Indonesia tried to limit the export of metal minerals to encourage local mining companies to build smelters, and stimulate their mineral processing industry. However, the government has made some concessions after being opposed by the mining industry.

Damanik said that they has asked the government to allow the annual export of 20 million tons of low grade laterite in the next 3-5 years.

Based on the premise of building smelters, mining companies are willing to accept export quotas, Damanik said.

"If Freeport were able to export their copper concentrate, why would not we?" He said, referring to US mining companies operating in Indonesia.

Mineral and Energy Minister Ignasius Jonon said last week that Indonesia would consider allowing exports of minerals, including nickel and bauxite, under certain conditions.
